Earn Your Respect ...?

這兩天和外師們一起做教育訓練,這樣的一個概念一直反覆的出現在這群美國貴客的言談中。

有些吃驚。
一直以為,「尊重」這樣的概念是天賦人權。
原來對於他們而言,在一個工作場域,每個人都必需「贏得」別人的尊重。這包含了表現出對同事們的體諒、關懷、協助,以及主動的展現對工作的熱誠與好奇。

我並不否認,在工作中我們常常會遇到某一些人,因為對工作態度、責任畫分的想法不同,逐漸的形塑了一個自己給週遭夥伴的觀感。但我並不清楚這樣的人是否就不值得我們尊重。

當我們不再尊重一個人的時候,所表現出來的態度會是什麼?當我們因為一個人的價值(工作態度、工作能力...)而不去尊重一個人的時候,表現出來的行為又會是什麼?

我希望帶給孩子的是:被尊重是每一個人與生俱來的權利,尊重他人是我們能讓這世界更美好的方式。

Just because someone is a bully does't mean we all have to counter-bully back to “earn our respect.” Respect is not supposed to be earned but a mutual cycle motivated and initiated by demonstration of one’s respectful thoughts, words and deeds.
